Toor Dal Khichdi Recipe

This is an easy-to-make recipe that can be served for lunch or dinner. An easy one-pot rice lentil dish, it can be cooked under 30 minutes.

Ingredients

1 cup Rice
1 cup Yellow Lentil / Toor Dal / Tuvar
4 cups Water – (Dal : Water ratio 1:2)
1/4 cup Chopped Onions
1/4 cup Chopped Tomatoes
5 tsp Oil
1/2 tsp Mustard Seeds / Rai
1/2 tsp Cumin Seeds / Jeera
2 tsp Peanuts / Groundnuts / Mungfali
1/4 tsp Asafoetida / Hing
1/2 tsp Chana Dal / Bengal gram
3 to 4 nos Slit Green Chillies
1/4 tsp Turmeric Powder / Haldi
1/4 tsp Coriander Powder / Dhaniya
1/2 tsp Garam Masala
3/4 tsp Salt
1 tsp Grated Garlic
Fresh Coriander finely chopped

Method

In a hot pan, add 5 teaspoons of oil and allow it to heat up.

Add ½ tsp of Mustard Seeds, ½ tsp of Cumin Seeds, 2 tsp of Groundnut, ¼ tsp of Asafoetida, ½ tsp of Chana Dal, ¼ cup of chopped Onions, 3 to 4 slit Green Chillies and sauté for 2 minutes on medium flame. The number of chillies can be modified based on your preference.

Add ¼ cup of chopped tomatoes and sauté for a minute.

Now add 1 cup of washed Toor Dal and mix well.

Add ¼ tsp of Turmeric Powder, ¼ tsp of Coriander Powder, ½ tsp of Garam Masala into the pan.

Now add 1 cup of washed rice followed by 4 cups of water.

Add ¾ tsp of salt, 1 tsp of grated garlic. The quantity of salt can be changed according to your taste.

Cover the lid and cook on a medium flame for 15 to 20 minutes.

Garnish with freshly chopped coriander leaves. Healthy toor dal khichdi is ready to be served with butter, ghee, pickle or curd. This recipe serves 6 people.
