  • 1 cup or 250 grams of besan
  • 1/4th teaspoon of turmeric powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon of red chilli powder
  • A pinch of asafoetida (hing)
  • 1/4th teaspoon carom seeds
  • Salt as per taste
  • 2 tablespoons of oil
  • Water as needed to make a soft dough
  • Oil for deep frying

  • Sieve the besan into a bowl. This is an important step to remove any lumps in the flour.
  • Add all the other dry ingredients, including the carom seeds to the flour. Mix all items thoroughly.
  • Make a small well in the middle of the spiced flour.
  • Now add the hot oil and mix well. Once the oil has cooled down enough, rub the mixture with your fingertips. This will give a texture which is similar to breadcrumbs.
