How to Make Rajma Chawal

Let’s finally learn how to make rajma and chawal. Rajma chawal is a mix of two different dishes – boiled rice and cooked whole red kidney beans.

Ingredients to Make Rajma Easy Recipe (4 servings)

For steamed rice:

1 cup rice, preferably basmati (200 gms)

2-2 1/2 cups water

1 clove

1 tsp ghee

For rajma:

1 cup soaked (8 hours) whole red kidney beans (200gms)

2 large onions

2 large tomatoes

1 tbsp garlic

1 tsp ginger

2 chopped green chillies

1 tbsp coriander powder

1 tbsp black pepper

1 cinnamon stick

1 tbsp garam masala powder

1 tbsp cumin powder

1 tsp turmeric powder

1 tsp amchur powder (dry mango powder)

2 green cardamom

2 cloves

1 tbsp ghee

3 tbsp oil of your choice or butter

10-15 coriander leaves (optional)

Instructions to Learn How to Make Rajma Chawal

For rice:

Step 1:

Rinse one cup of rice with water, two-three times.

Step 2:

Add the rice with 4-5 cups of water to either a deep-bottomed pan or a pressure cooker. Cooking it in a pan will result in separated rice kernels. If you are in a hurry, cook it in a pressure cooker.

Step 3:

Add salt, clove and ghee to give it an interesting flavour (optional).

Step 4:

Turn on the heat and cook for 10 minutes.

Step 5:

Turn off the heat and let the rice get cooked by the steam for 5-6 minutes. That’s it. Your rice is ready.

For rajma:

Step 1:

Soak rajma overnight. This reduces the cooking time drastically. Then pressure cook it for about four whistles with salt, turmeric and water.

Step 2:

Grind onions in a paste. Grind tomatoes, ginger, garlic and green chillies in a separate paste using a grinder-mixer.

Step 3:

Heat a deep bottomed pan. Add oil or butter to it. Once the oil is hot enough, add all the spices and masalas and let them crackle. Then add the onion paste. Let it cook for 2-3 minutes. Then add the tomatoes, ginger, garlic, green chillies paste.

Step 4:

Let the mix cook for about 7-8 minutes, until the oil starts to appear on the sides. Now add the rajma and one cup of water.

Step 5:

Mix it well, cover the pan and let it cook for 10 minutes.

Step 6: 

Garnish it with ghee and coriander to enhance its flavour.
