Why Jeera Chicken?

A spice used in almost every Indian dish– cumin is used both as powder and seeds. These seeds are packed with a distinct flavour and have a surplus of nutrition benefits. Preparing this jeera chicken curry will ensure better health without compromising taste.

Jeera has been used as a traditional medicine for digestive disorders for many years. Relief from both acidity and indigestion can be sought with jeera soaked water. Boiling your drinking water with jeera is proven to enhance immunity and works as an anti-inflammatory.

Cumin also helps control weight loss with daily consumption and control sugar and cholesterol. But you must make your jeera chicken curry with the best of the ingredients.

Source your jeera for an organic and authentic store. Organic ingredients are known to have no additives and are developed in the most healthy ways. This care will ensure that the jeera is rich in antioxidants and provides higher benefits to your body. Additionally, it all implies there is no added colour, fragrance, or unwanted dust.

When you buy organic jeera or cumin powder, you also give a better life to the farmers who work hard to grow these spices. Organic foods are grown with extra caution to nature, reduce risks of food-related disorders, and prevent water contamination and pollution.

The jeera chicken curry below makes the perfect meal for any weather, any day, any time. Here is everything you need to know:

Cooking Time:

Prep: 15 Minutes
Cooking: 15 Minutes
Total: 30 Minutes

Vessels Needed:

Sauce Pan – 1
Deep Kadhai, or Pot – 1
Mixer Grinder

Ingredients

For Masala:

  • Cumin Seeds: 2 teaspoon
  • Pepper Seeds: 1 teaspoon
  • Fennel Seeds (Saunf): ½ teaspoon
  • Clove: ½ teaspoon
  • Cinnamon Sticks: 3
  • Cardamom (Elichi) pods: 2
  • Coriander Seeds

For Main Dish:

  • Chicken cut to medium or large size
  • Onions – 1 large size.
  • Lemon juice
  • Ginger-garlic paste: 2 teaspoons
  • Oil
  • Curry leaves
  • Salt to taste

How to Make Jeera Chicken:

Prep:

  • On a saucepan, dry roast all the ingredients for the masala. You will know they are done when the cumin seeds slightly change colour or the coriander seeds start to pop.
  • Set this aside and let it cook for a few minutes.
  • Once cooled, grind in a mixer for fine powder.
  • Place chicken pieces in a bowl and wash well under running water.
  • Dab them with a paper towel to remove extra water.
  • To this, add half a lemon worth of juice, salt, and a light sprinkle of the masala.
  • Rub the spices on the chicken well, so they are well coated for the best jeera chicken curry. Keep aside for 20 minutes.
  • Chop onions into thin slices and keep aside.

Cooking instructions:

  • In a heated deep dish, add a tablespoon of oil.
  • Once hot, add the chopped onions. Fry them till the onions look transparent.
  • Add curry leaves and mix.
  • Now add the ginger-garlic paste and mix well. Cook till the mixture turns aromatic and loses the raw smell.
  • Add the remaining of the ground masala and mix well.
  • Add the chicken and stir well to combine the masala with the chicken evenly.
  • Add some water and close the lid.
  • Let the chicken cook well.
  • Garnish the jeera chicken curry with fresh coriander and some lime juice.

Alterations and Variations:

  • You can also add green chillies with the onions for an extra punch.
  • If you like the dish spicer, add a small hint of chilli powder into the chicken marinate. Do not add it to the main dish as it would overpower the primary cumin flair.
  • The jeera chicken recipe aims to be a curry; if you wish for a dry dish and add lesser water.
  • If you want a creamer gravy, add some curd to the chicken marinate.

Cooking Notes:

  • You can also use small chicken pieces if you are making a jeera chicken curry. However, for a dry alternative, use bigger pieces.
  • This dish is best enjoyed hot.

Side:

This delicious jeera chicken recipe complements both roti and rice. However, the best side of this is aromatic rice. Additionally, stuffed kulcha or naan is also ideal. For those who find this too spicy, serve it with a side of curd.

If prepared in the dry alternative, it also makes for an excellent appetizer.
