Should you eat eggs as a diabetic?

Diabetes is a medical disorder which impairs the body’s ability to breakdown glucose, thereby, increasing the blood sugar level. Hence, diabetic patients are asked to avoid sugar and carb-enriched food products in their diet. Nevertheless, if consumed in moderation, diabetic patients can even savour mangoes every once in a while. That being said, eggs are one food item that contains more protein than sugar.

An egg is a wholesome food which is low on carbohydrates and even has a low glycaemic index score. This in itself qualifies eggs to be a perfect food for diabetic patients as it does not increase an individual’s blood sugar level. Many people raise concerns because of the cholesterol content in eggs. However even the cholesterol content is quite minuscule when compared to the amount of beneficial protein in it.

As a matter of fact, most of the cholesterol content is deposited in the yolk of the egg. The egg whites can be easily consumed by the diabetic patient without being worried about the cholesterol level.


Eggs are rich in protein and low in fats and calories. Moreover, it can also satiate one’s hunger quite easily and this enables a diabetic patient to maintain an ideal weight. Eggs don’t just fulfill the protein requirement but also consist of all the nine amino acids needed by the body. One whole egg generally contains the following nutritional elements:

  3. 8g saturated fat
  4. 216mg cholesterol
  5. 80mg sodium
  6. 4gm carbohydrate
  7. 4gm sugar
  8. 3g protein

It is also enriched with Vitamin B-12 and minerals such as iron, copper, and zinc. It also consists of the vitamin-like nutrient known as choline which boosts the memory. While the yolk may be rich in cholesterol, it is also packed with essential fats and Vitamins like A, D, E, and K. The presence of a particular antioxidant known as lutein adds further value for those who consume eggs.

Considering the nutritional value,  eggs don’t just play a major role in regulating the blood pressure but also help in maintaining physiological functions and keeping the body healthy. If we balance out our diet by having eggs and lowering the consumption of other saturated fats then one need not apply any strict rule on consuming eggs.
