Soaked Almonds vs. Raw Almonds

Having soaked or raw almonds is not a matter of taste but a healthier lifestyle. Almonds are an excellent source of vitamins and minerals; however, when they are soaked overnight, it increases the absorption of these nutrients by our body. Some of the benefits of soaked almonds include:

Eases digestion

Since almonds are hard and tough in texture, digesting them can be difficult. That is why soaking them for at least eight to ten hours not only softens the nut but also reduces the level of antinutrients, which impair digestion.

Increases Absorption of Nutrients

When soaked, almonds can increase the absorption of certain nutrients, particularly fat [1,2]. Also, since soaked almonds are softer in texture, it makes it easy for digestive enzymes to break it down and effectively absorb nutrients.

The Right Way To Soak Almonds

To soak almonds, place a handful of almonds in a bowl, and add lukewarm water until the nuts are fully covered.

You can also add some salt, but that is purely optional. In case you’d like to add salt, then for every 1 cup of nuts (140 grams), add a teaspoon of salt.

Cover the bowl and soak the almonds for at least 8–12 hours. However, it is best to soak almonds overnight so that it becomes softer, and the skin peels off easily.

Drain the water and rinse. You can remove the skin for a buttery texture. Pat dry the nuts using a clean paper towel.

Consume a couple of soaked nuts as snacks every day for a healthy lifestyle.

Soaked almonds vs. Raw almonds: Matter of Choice

While raw almonds are hard and crunchy, with a mildly bitter aftertaste due to their tannins, soaked almonds are softer, less bitter, and buttery in texture [3]. The difference in taste is also a reason why many people prefer having it in soaked form instead of raw.

Raw Almonds Are Just As Healthy

While soaking almonds tend to increase their digestibility and absorption of nutrients, raw organic almonds are just as healthy. These nuts are a rich source of protein, fibre, vitamin E, manganese, magnesium, and healthy fats [4].

The skin of almonds is a rich source of antioxidants like polyphenols, which can reduce the chances of chronic illnesses, including heart disease and type 2 diabetes. Regular consumption of this nut is not only associated with weight loss but is also known to lower LDL (bad cholesterol) and increase HDL (good cholesterol) levels.

Bottom Line

Soaked almonds vs. raw almonds is a matter of choice since consuming organic almonds in either form provides several important nutrients such as antioxidants, fibre, and healthy fats.
