Making yummy dal tadka
Preparation time – 15 minutes
Cooking time – Half an hour
Ingredients you need for the dal
Tur dal – 200 gm
Turmeric powder – 1/2 teaspoon
Salt – as needed
Ginger – 1 inch
Green chilli – 1
Garlic – 4 cloves
Ghee – 1.5 tablespoon
Red chilli powder – 1/4 teaspoon
Garam masala – 1/4 teaspoon
Coriander powder – 1/2 teaspoon
Tomatoes – 2, medium-sized, chopped
Coriander leaves – a bunch, freshly chopped
Kasuri methi – 1 teaspoon
Cumin seeds – 1 teaspoon
Water – as needed
Onion – 1, finely chopped
Cloves – 3-4
Ingredients needed for tadka
Ghee – 2 teaspoon
Asafoetida – 1/4 teaspoon
Red chilli powder – 1/4 teaspoon
Garlic – 2, coves, chopped finely
Dried red chillies – 2
How to make dal tadka
Take a pressure cooker and add some water followed by some salt, turmeric powder and tur dal. Now let it cook on medium flame till 4-5 whistles. After that, simmer on low flame for a few minutes and put it down.
Place a wok on a high flame and pour ghee into it. As it becomes hot, add the cumin seeds, coriander seeds and 2-3 cloves.
Saute a bit and add the finely chopped onion. When it is frying, crush the garlic, green chillies and ginger add it to the onion when they become translucent and cook them for 2-3 minutes.
Now mix the chopped tomatoes and cook it until the pieces are soft.
Once they are soft, start mixing the spices one by one. Turmeric powder, coriander powder, red chilli powder and garam masala, kasuri methi – add everything and dry them till their raw smell go away.
Transfer the tur dal from the cooker to the wok and add the chopped cilantro and pour some water and mix well.
Let the dal boil for 4-5 minutes on low flame.
While the dal is boiling, place a dry pan on high flame and add the ghee. As soon as the ghee becomes hot, add the dry red chillies, crushed garlic and red chilli powder. Saute a bit and add them on the top of the dal and give them a nice mix.
That is it! Your delicious dal tadka is ready to be served. To give it a nice smoky flavour, you can put a small bowl with hot charcoal within the dal and add a dollop of ghee on the charcoal. Cover the wok immediately and keep it like that for 10 minutes. After that, take off the lid and serve the dal with hot rotis or paratha.
