  1. Mix one cup of jowar flour, half cup of besan, an inch of chopped ginger, four cloves of chopped garlic, three teaspoons of sesame seeds, one tsp of red chilli powder, half tsp of turmeric powder and salt to taste. To this mixture, add a half cup of water and mix well
  2. Heat up the pan and add a few drops of oil in each segment. Using a spoon, add small amounts of batter to each part and steam the vadas
  3. After a few minutes, you can flip the vada and close the pan again to let it get steamed completely
  4. To check if the vadas are fully cooked, use a fork to pierce the centre and see that it comes out clean

Jowar chakli recipe

This is one of our favourite jowar flour snacks recipes. It is a gluten-free substitute for the delicious chakli that we’ve all grown up enjoying.

  1. Mix one and a half cups of jowar flour, half cup chana dal flour, hing, red chilli powder, jeera powder, salt, sesame seeds, and about a cup of water
  2. Add a few teaspoons of oil and mix well until you get the right consistency
  3. Heat oil in a kadai and wait for it to become very hot
  4. Using a chakli press, squeeze small amounts of the chakli batter directly into the oil into the shape of your choice
  5. Fry the chakli until it is golden brown, remove and dry on tissue paper or a cloth towel

Jowar flour pancakes

These pancakes are a great snack to have in the evening with your tea or even as breakfast.

  1. Mix chopped onions, green chillies, coriander leaves and grated cucumber with one cup of jowar flour. Add turmeric powder, salt, and two tablespoons of curd
  2. Mix all of this with water, a little at a time, until the batter reaches the consistency of dosa batter
  3. Using a ladle, spread the batter on a heated pan in a circular shape, and cook it like you would cook a dosa!
