Although not considered a serious illness, cough can be inconvenient and extremely irritating. Many times, even cough syrup and medication don’t help. In such a situation there are some excellent natural remedies that work wonders and provide relief in a few days.

Here are five home remedies that can help you get rid of the annoying cough:

Black pepper tea

Black pepper comes with a number of advantages. One of the most common advantages is that it improves circulation and mucus flow. To make black pepper tea, all you have to do is mix a teaspoon of freshly ground black pepper and two tablespoons of honey in a cup of boiling water. Let it steep for 15 minutes, and strain. This works best for wet cough.

Milk and honey

Warm milk can be soothing for the throat. Honey has the same effect as medications like levodropropizine and dextromethorphan on your throat. Mix two teaspoons of dark honey with warm milk and drink it up.

Ginger tea

Ginger works best for dry or asthmatic cough. It has anti-inflammatory properties, which are said to relax membranes in the airways, thereby reducing coughing. You can prepare ginger tea by adding fresh ginger slices to regular or black tea and allowing it to steep for a few minutes.

Gargling salt water

This is one of the simplest and most effective treatments for sore throat and wet cough. It reduces phlegm and mucus in the throat. Use warm water and let the mixture rest at the back of your throat before spitting it out. Do this several times a day till the cough subsides.

Peppermint tea and vapour

Peppermint leaves have healing properties and act as decongestants. Menthol helps to break down mucus. You can make peppermint tea or inhale vapours from a steam bath. Add 3 to 4 drops of peppermint oil in hot water, cover your head with a towel, and breathe deeply.

Besides being great at treating cough, all the above food items are good for health: even more so when they are produced organically. That means no chemicals go into their production, right from the stage of sowing to reaping and packaging.
