Superfoods have been trending in the health and wellness industry for the past few years. Wheatgrass is one such superfood. It has become extremely popular because of its immense health benefits and nutrition. But can you use wheatgrass for cholesterol? We will find out in this blog?

Wheatgrass for cholesterol

Wheatgrass is rich in Protein, Vitamins, Minerals, Antioxidants and many other nutrients which make it capable of providing many health benefits. Before we discuss wheatgrass for cholesterol, let’s know more about cholesterol and how it harms human health.

Understanding cholesterol

Although cholesterol has been demonised for the past few decades. But it is not all bad. It is a waxy substance found throughout the body, which is needed by our body to make hormones and produce bile.

But excess of anything is bad. And hence, excess cholesterol also causes many health issues.  Excessive cholesterol in our blood can block blood flow and increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases as well. Hence, you need to keep your cholesterol levels in control.

Our liver makes all the cholesterol that we need. The other source of cholesterol in our body is the food from animals like meat, poultry and dairy products.

There are two types of cholesterol:

    1. LDL (bad) cholesterol: LDL is considered the “bad” cholesterol, because it contributes to sticky and fatty buildups in arteries, making them narrow and increases the risk for heart diseases.
  • HDL (good) cholesterol: HDL can be considered as the “good” cholesterol because a healthy level may protect against heart attack and stroke. HDL carries LDL (bad) cholesterol away from the arteries and back to the liver, where the LDL is broken down and passed from the body. But HDL cholesterol can’t completely eliminate LDL cholesterol from the body.

Now let’s understand the relationship between wheatgrass and cholesterol

Several animal studies have found that wheatgrass may help lower cholesterol levels.

In some studies the effects of wheatgrass have been found similar to those of atorvastatin, a prescription drug commonly used to treat high blood cholesterol. The animal studies show promising results. But further studies are needed to assess wheatgrass for cholesterol in humans. While it seems that it can help even humans control their cholesterol levels and bring them to balance, there is not even evidence to support it for humans.

In fact, weight watchers have started adding wheatgrass juice to their diet. The thylakoids in wheatgrass can enhance satiety and increase weight loss.

The right time to consume wheatgrass

Having wheatgrass juice on an empty stomach can help avoid nausea. When consumed on an empty stomach, it gets incorporated into the bloodstream in 20 minutes, giving your skin a natural glow and instant burst of energy.
